Frequently Asked Questions
SDA is an NDIS-funded support that provides housing to individuals who require a high level of support and home modifications to meet their needs appropriately.
This specific support is designed to help you access a customised home suitable to your needs.
SDA funding is generally included under Capital funding and covers the cost of modifications and their upkeep in your home.
It’s important to note that this support does not cover the cost of rent, which can be supplemented by the Disability Support Pension (DSP) if required. SDA also may not be utilized for support workers in your home, as this is funded mainly under Support Independent Living (SIL).
It’s not uncommon to get Supported Independent Living (SIL) and Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) confused, with both funding to assist individuals to live more independently.
However, to put it simply, SIL is about providing support so you can live more independently. In contrast, SDA funding subsidises a fit-for-purpose home’s building and ongoing maintenance expenses.
These building and maintenance costs generally cover inclusions not found in conventional housing, such as electric doorways or fully adjustable benchtops. SDA funding is generally provided to participants who require accessible features in their homes to ensure they can live more independently.
While SIL and SDA exist independently, participants may be qualified for both.
Getting SDA in your NDIS plan can occasionally be a complex journey. To give yourself the best chance of getting SDA, you should first demonstrate to the NDIS that you require a lot of additional support and that there are no suitable alternatives available to you.
A Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) from a registered Occupational Therapist can be an excellent tool to help explain this, as this assessment will provide a clear overview of your life and highlight barriers you’re facing.
Once you have this, you should present it in your next plan review. Alternatively, you can lodge a change in circumstances request and ask for more suitable housing.
